The year was 2002. A college student named Matt Mullenweg installed the b2 or cafelog blogging system for personal use, and he had left it for some time without any updating. In April 2003, Matt created a new branch of b2 with the help of a friend, Mike Little. They called it WordPress and the name stuck. The first version, WordPress 0.7 was released in May 2003.
January 2004 saw the release of WordPress 1.0 aka Davis’ version. Mullenweg is a jazz aficionado and all the update names are from the name of famous jazz musicians. In every release he includes a plugin called Hello Dolly. This plugin is a tribute to Louis Armstrong.
In Matt Mullenweg’s own words – Hello Dolly symbolizes the hope and enthusiasm of an entire generation summed up in two words sung most famously by Louis Armstrong.
With search engine friendly permalinks, simple installations, upgrade capabilities and comment moderation the program was a true blogging system, sort of an early CMS system.
In October 2004, Matt dropped out of college to join CNET to help them with their blogs. After a year, he left CNET and created the Akismet comment spam filter for WordPress. So far, it is the most popular comment spam protector for blogs.
Matt founded Automattic, now the parent company of WordPress, and by 2006 Automattic is a well growing business and brand.
2008 witnessed the launch of the WordPress Theme Directory where anyone can develop and upload their themes. Now there are more than 5000 themes available for download.
A lot of WordPress updates then ensued at regular intervals which made all WordPress Development Companies dance in excitement. And the excitement continues.
